The crazy business of making babies.

Scarlet's due date was today.  We are so lucky to already have her here.  I thought I would write out how her birth day went down.  Mostly so I don't forget all the details like I have with the other kids.

My parents were in town for the Mountain West basketball tournament.  I left my kids with them while I attended my 38 week checkup on Friday morning.  Good news- I was already dilated to a 4 and 75% effaced.  My doctor predicted that I would have this baby by the next Monday.  I went home excited, but pretty sure this baby wasn't going to grace us with an early delivery.  I was on and off contracting throughout the day.  I went to a BYU women's game with my dad.  You would think that everyone there hadn't seen a pregnant women in awhile.  All had to throw in their cute comments like "Boy, you're not going to have this baby during the game are you?"  or  "I can't believe that you are taking the stairs."  My dad and I were laughing about all the reactions.  The game was super fun to watch.  All the ponytails, and the muscly arms made me want to book it to the gym to play some bball.

As we were walking out to the car, I had my dad take this picture for me:
(and now I am thinking that womb was huge!! no wonder the comments!)

Later in the evening after the contractions had been steady for quite awhile, we figured we better book it to the hospital.  Friends came and picked up the kids (thank you so much!!!!)  and helped John give me a blessing.  Sam politely asked if they could bless that it would be a boy...we all got a chuckle over that.  We headed to Labor and Delivery arriving around 7pm.  The nurses checked and I was still at a 4.  A bit discouraged, we ended up walking around the hospital for an entire hour.  We came back into L&D at 9 pm.  Checked, progressed to a 5.  That meant that I didn't have to go home, which was a good thing because I was starting to feel the pain.  I asked for an epidural, and they started to get that all set up. After a few minutes  I was having super intense and painful contractions.  I was barely able to control my breathing, and there were lots of tears and crying.  Then, I needed to push. It was all over quickly from this point. Doctors and nursed came running in.   No time for an epidural.  The doctor had to tell me to get a hold of myself (stop crying) and concentrate on pushing the baby out.  And then she was born (relief) at 9:38 pm, around 30 minutes after we got back to L&D.   John was giddy from the moment we got to the hospital.  (Proof: look at the picture below!)  He was really supportive,  I couldn't have done any of it without him.

The next day, the kids came to see their new sister!  They couldn't come in because of the dangers of RSV, but at least they could see what she looked like through the nursery window.

Grandpa and Grandma were the lucky ones to come in and hold her.

Sounds a little like how things went down when I had Gracie. I couldn't believe I was one of those women yelling in pain! :) Although I hope I never have to have another baby without pain meds it sure made me appreciate what my mom went through. I was so exhausted after she was born I almost felt too shaky to hold her! Glad she is here safe and sound and that you are doing well!
